Dear Joel,

Greetings from Norway! I was so happy to get the message you left for me. I didn’t know what to think when you weren’t at the pier. I was afraid you didn’t want to see me anymore.

I’m working long hours in Uncle’s restaurant from early morning to late at night. I have my own small room upstairs, but it’s right over the kitchen so it always smells like fish. Uncle is so different from my parents. Last night he yelled me for dropping some dishes. Everyone in the restaurant heard him. Later he grabbed my arm and tried to make up with a big slobbery kiss. I shoved him down. Easy to do because he’d been drinking. He has such a bad temper. When his face gets red, I move as far away from him as I can in this small place. I don’t know how much longer I can stay here. But where else can I go?

Thank you again for helping me on the ship. It was a sad time then. Please, if you want to, write back to me. You are the only friend I have over here. I’m so homesick. But where is home? It is not in America and it is not here, either. Write soon.

Your friend from the ship,

Kari Berg
